2008 RESEARCH

INTERIM FINDINGS

After extensive consultations with scientists and stakeholders, the Forum adopted a two year research strategy to fill knowledge gaps and provide the scientific underpinning for future research and recommendations for managing the interactions between aquaculture and wild salmon.

The Forum visualized its two year research strategy as the foundation of a more comprehensive five year research program that will extend beyond the present mandate of the Forum and that will enlist other organizations concerned about sustainability of wild and farmed salmon and potentially address other ecosystem based research pertinent to other areas within the marine environment.

The Forum allocated $1.8 million in seed funding to support this initiative in 2007 and 2008 and sought additional funding support from other potential collaborators. Additional funding by participating research agencies was anticipated to provide a total program budget of over $3 million.
